Audit Risks Coming Out of a Public Health Emergency (PHE)

This session will focus on the areas payers and government agencies are taking a closer look at to determine Fraud Waste and Abuse (FWA). Topics include Evaluation and Management Services (Medical Necessity and Clinical Judgement), Telehealth and the proposed new subsection added by the government to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS – 2022) and other high-risk audit targets. 2021 has without a doubt been the year of the audit and the aggressive stance taken by payers and their contracted bounty hunters should make all healthcare professionals/providers sit up and take notice.

Matt Jones is CEO of Turnsole LLC, a healthcare and financial technology firm focused on healthcare revenue cycle analytics and workflow management. Serving both healthcare end-users and the banking sector, Turnsole is committed to creating value for both physician clients and our financial institution partners.

Previously, Mr. Jones was a Principal at Pilot Wall Group, an Austin, Texas-based group of investors and operators focusing on healthcare and adjacent sectors, pursuing equity positions in early-stage ventures, as well as later-stage private equity investments.

Throughout his career, Mr. Jones has served in numerous senior executive roles. From 2005 to 2013, he served as President and CEO of Enterprise Venture Management, Ltd. EVM was formed in 2005 to serve as a single-destination resource for financial institutions and healthcare organizations seeking revenue enhancement.

Prior to founding EVM, Mr. Jones served as Chief Operating Officer of Nations Surgery Centers in Los Angeles, California where he was responsible for business operations and financial performance of a network of multi-specialty outpatient surgery centers. Before coming to Nations, Mr. Jones was West Coast Vice President of Pinnacle Healthcare, Inc., a surgery center development and management company based in Houston, Texas.

Mr. Jones began his healthcare career in finance at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and then advanced to the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System in Houston, Texas where he rose to the position of Chief Operating Officer of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital.

Medical Practice Compliance Medley

As federal and state governments demand more and more from medical practices in the regulatory realm and as we emerge from our focus on COVID-19, those in the medical business need to get caught up. Participants will receive an overview of emerging compliance issues of which medical practices need to be aware and address. The second part of the presentation will consist of a walkthrough of some state law compliance issues straight from the files of the TMA legal department. With over 30 years of experience, your instructor will help navigate you out of compliance paralysis and give you resources to get back on track.

Senior VP & General Counsel – TMA

Yarnell Beatty joined the Tennessee Medical Association in 2001 as general counsel to the largest medical organization in Tennessee. In 2004, he was appointed to oversee TMA’s legal, government affairs, insurance, and eHealth departments. He was promoted to Vice President of Advocacy in 2013 and named Senior Vice President in 2017.

Prior to joining TMA, Beatty served as staff counsel to the Tennessee Department of Health and held positions in the Department as Executive Director of the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners and Director of Health Related Boards.

Beatty has been strongly involved in the Tennessee Medical Group Management Association, having served on the Executive Council and Legislative Committee.

He holds a seat on the Compliance Committee of the Physicians’ Advocacy Institute, Inc., the national entity charged with monitoring and enforcing the managed care class action settlements. In 2009, he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Physicians’ Quality Verification Organization, LLC (TPQVO), a company that provides original source credentials verification for physicians and physician assistants. He was President of the American Society of Medical Association Counsel in 2013 and has served on the Executive Council of the Tennessee Bar Association Health Law Section.

Beatty holds a B.A. degree from Vanderbilt University and law degree from Emory University School of Law in Atlanta.

Chad Holman is the Deputy Inspector General-East Region for the TN Office of Inspector General. In this role, he manages a team of investigators and commissioned special agents as they identify, investigate, and potentially prosecute those who commit fraud against the TennCare (Medicaid) system.

Chad is currently enrolled in the Tennessee Certified Public Manager Program through the UT Naifeh Center for Effective Leadership. In 2020, he was selected for and attended the Tennessee Government Executive Leadership Academy.

A Nashville native, Chad began his service-based career in the United States Marine Corps in 1992. In 1996, he became a Police Officer with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department and gained invaluable experience through assignments in undercover narcotics enforcement, organized gambling and prostitution, adult missing person(s), and cold case homicide investigations.

In May of 2013, Chad left the MNPD and accepted an appointment with OIG, where he has served as a Special Agent, Supervising Special Agent, and currently serves as a Firearms and Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Deputy Inspector General.

Chad resides in Robertson Co, TN with his wife Jill, son Blaine, daughter Lauren, and too many domestic and farm animals to count!
